· Many babies are at risk of being one of the 12 or so* newborns subjected to abduction attempts from hospitals each year in the UK, some being taken illegally in a premeditated fashion by their own family members when under Local Authority Care Orders, for example, or by psychiatric patients. This equates to one abduction or attempted abduction each month on average

· Newborns and those in neonatal care also rank amongst patient groups at the highest risk of healthcare associated infection

· Hospitals which operate no secure secondary means of ensuring identity are enhancing the risk of transferring disease through accidental breastfeeding of babies, and are significantly enhancing the risk of identity mix-ups

* Did you know that if you are using baby security systems currently that involve any non-disposable element to them that you are at significant risk of passing infection or cross contamination from baby to baby? Even if you have an agreed sterilisation method for these non-disposable parts, can you be 100% sure that they are always sterilised after use? If you can, can you be 100% sure that they are sterilised properly and thoroughly in all the nooks, crannies and joints that harbour and encourage infection, bacteria and disease? This is a big risk for hospitals and a vital consideration when reviewing your security needs.

* Did you know that if you are not using an alarmed baby tagging security system, or you are using a system that includes products that can be easily cut or removed from the baby that you could be at real risk of either an identity mix up or an abduction attempt being successful at your hospital?

We have an economical solution to these problems. After comprehensive discussions with midwives, hospital risk managers and clinical maternity staff we have developed a system which ensures that ALL of the following essential factors are addressed in one solution whereby:

· the security bands are designed more specifically to address clinical and operational needs, i.e: being waterproof, anti-bacterial, lightweight, lockable, secure, alarmed, comfortable, safe and easily adjustable in size;

· the security bands are fully disposable, accompanied by an extremely simple database that prevents secondary use of the tag through human error, thereby totally eliminating the existing cross-contamination risks from baby to baby tagging;

· a baby and mother are prevented from leaving a maternity unit without each other (or without an authorised person), for whatever reason. This is a system that uses lockable doors and audio/visual alarms which can be heard/seen by all ward staff;

· the security bands are not easily cut or removed by an unauthorised person;

· security bands need never be removed from the baby or mother whilst within the hospital (e.g. when bathing) thereby not compromising security or identity considerations at any stage in the after-birth care process;

· in addition to their standard removable NHS ID bracelet, babies are linked specifically and more securely to their mothers’ identity in a secondary capacity whilst in the maternity unit which enables double verification of a baby’s/mother’s joint identity prior to departure or at any point whilst within the unit;

· the system is simple and straight forward enough to operate thereby minimising instances of false alarms and wasted time so that staff can concentrate on their core roles and responsibilities as opposed to managing the security system;

· staff have complete confidence in the system. Staff losing faith in some existing systems (e.g. because of the systems being of too little quality or too much complexity) may not necessarily pay as much regard to instances of alarms thereby making the systems less effective overall;

· is cost effective, being cheap to install, operate and maintain;

· uses technology that is totally tried and tested for many years, minimising any risks associated with using something new. A system that is provided by established, well known UK-based national operators.
